The next step for a high performer

About the role

One of the most important roles for local government in the coming year will of course be in managing the impact of – and recovery from – the coronavirus pandemic. Our focus is primarily on the health and wellbeing of workers, residents and future visitors to Wychavon, and much will depend on progress at a national level, as well as keeping a close eye on prevalence of the illness in our district.

The new Deputy Chief Executive will be absolutely central to this task. Our joint management structure means that the person appointed will be in charge of planning, leading, and monitoring significant aspects of our response as they relate to Wychavon DC, and you will be joining us at a time when events are likely to be developing rapidly. Now more than ever, you may be expected to step up as the day-to-day manager for Wychavon, and your willingness to do so must be rooted in experience and exceptional leadership.

You’ll also be an important part of the six-strong Joint Management Team which delivers services for both our constituent councils, and we're looking for candidates who are ready for the visibility, accountability and a strategic approach this requires. While development will occupy much of your time, you will also hold responsibility for business-critical professional support services operating across both councils, and your ability to lead business change and innovation will also be extremely important.

An entrepreneurial approach is absolutely vital; you’ll be the person who makes difficult things happen, unlocks stalled projects, and brings together partnerships that can generate positive outcomes. Open, forward looking and politically astute, you'll form constructive relationships not only with elected members, but also a range of external stakeholders. We are currently beginning work on regeneration and development in our principal towns – Pershore, Droitwich Spa and Evesham. Your active engagement with, and contribution to, these projects will be vital.

Candidate profile

It’s a great opportunity for an ambitious chartered accountant (CIPFA or other), who wants to gain the maximum possible experience of leading a broad-spectrum public service. You are likely to be currently working at director level in a district, or assistant director at a larger authority, or a close equivalent. Attitude will be really important: we want to hear from people who have a strong desire to change things, and who get their professional satisfaction from making things happen

A close familiarity with all the nuances of the s.151 role is obviously essential, but you will also have a lively, curious interest in the wider leadership of an organisation like ours. Innovative, creative, generous with your attention and with a philosophy of ‘always learning’, you’ll find that success in this role positions you perfectly for the next career step in the years to come.
